Amazon Jungle Essentials
The Amazon Rainforest is hands-down a bucket-list destination worthy of visiting and experiencing at least once in your life. So if you’re heading to the Amazon Jungle, then you will NEED the proper essentials to make your visit safe and memorable. I’ve gathered the best 32 essentials that guarantees you will experience the Amazon Jungle in maximum comfort and enjoyment.
What To Wear to the Amazon Jungle
1. Lightweight & Breathable Tops
I brought both long sleeves and tank tops that were breathable and made with synthetic material. These are essentials when out trekking through the hot and humid Amazon Jungle. Long Sleeves are better if you want to be covered up from brush and bugs, but the tank tops really helped with staying cooler. If you do decide to bring tank tops, do bring good bug repellant!
2. Lightweight Quick-Dry Pants
Bring some lightweight pants made of quick-dry material. I brought these trail pants and they worked just fine for me. I did have to be sure to apply bug repellant at the ankles
3. Light Rain Jacket or Poncho
You are in the RAINforest so it’s common for spontaneous downpours of rain to occur. Be prepared for sudden rains and bring a light rain coat. I brought a light North Face jacket and that worked perfect for me.
4. Sun Hat
A hat will help protect your head and face from brush, things falling from trees above, bugs, and the sun.
5. Swimsuit
The Amazon Lodge you’ll be staying at will likely have a pool so bring a swimsuit so you can relax and enjoy the pool. The pool is also a great way to cool off from the Jungle heat!
6. Sleepwear
Bring sleepwear that is light and breathable so that you don’t overheat in the middle of the night. These are especially useful if you’re staying at a lodge with no air conditioning.
Footwear
7. Hiking Shoes or Boots
You will be walking a ton when out in the Amazon Jungle, so be sure to bring good hiking shoes with good ankle support, good sole grip, are waterproof, and that you’re already comfortable walking in.
8. Waterproof Sandals
You can wear these around the lodge and to the pool. They’ll also come handy if your lodge has outdoor showers and you want to keep some shoes on.
9. Quick-Dry Socks
As mentioned, it gets hot and humid out in the Amazon Jungle. So to keep your feet comfortable, wear quick-dry socks made of synthetic or wool fabrics. Cotton sock will probably be uncomfortable and get wet and soggy. Who loves wet feet?
Bug Protection
10. Bug Repellant Spray
This is a big and probably the MOST important Amazon Jungle essential: BRING STRONG INSECT REPELLANT! Bringing one with either DEET or Picardin will surely keep you safe from pesky mosquito bites. I brought the spray linked below, and it kept me safe from bug bites even when I opted to wear a tank top in the Amazon Rainforest! So I can’t recommend it enough!
11. Bug Repellant Lotion
You still have to keep your face protected from insect bites, but spraying it is uncomfortable and also unsafe to breathe in directly. So bring an Insect repellant in lotion form so you can easily apply and re-apply it to your face. I brought this lotion and it kept me safe from but bits on my face! So I can’t recommend it enough!
12. After-Bite Suction
In case you do get bit by insects, bring a couple after-bite remedies to help minimize the bite effects. The After-bite suction is best used with new bites where it will essentially suck the insect “poison” out of the bite, therefore minimizing size and itch effects.
13. After-Bite Zapper
The After-bite zapper will actually use an electric current which also minimizes the itch effects afterwards.
14. After-bit Anti-Itch Cream
To further help not feel any itch effects, get after-bit anti-itch cream! This will help keep you from scratching your bites and making it much worse:
15. Mosquito Head Net
Having a mosquito head net isn’t super necessary but it will definitely increase your comfort where you don’t have to worry about any bug biting your face. If you’re scared of bugs or just flat out don’t like them, then this essential becomes a must-bring to the Amazon.
Personal Care
16. Sunscreen & SPF Lip Balm
When out in the tropical sun, be sure to apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from sunburn. Also, don’t forget a lip balm with SPF too to keep your lips from sunburning and drying out. I usually bring the below sunscreen and lip balm since they are non-greasy and provide the necessary sun protection!
17. Hand Sanitizer
Absolute must for a quick way to sanitize your hands from bacteria and germs. Comes in a rubber holder you can attach to your bag or carryon for easy accessibility. These come in a pack of 4.
18. Dissolvable Soap Sheets
Awesome for those restrooms that are lacking soap supply, which may be common in Amazon Jungle restrooms.
I literally bring these with me everywhere!! Extremely convenient when I'm in need of soap. Some public restrooms may not have soap, so these are great to stay clean for exactly these moments. Also, they’re super compact and easy to pack and bring with you everywhere.
19. Toilet Paper or Tissues
Some public restrooms in the Amazon Jungle may not have toilet paper, so pack a small tissue or toilet paper. This will ensure you’re prepared for any situation and add a layer of comfort to your adventure. Just make sure to bring a small bag for trash to dispose of the paper afterwards.
20. Small Bag for Trash
To keep all your waste in one place and not litter, bring a small trash bag. This should be small enough you can keep in your backpack.
21. Blister Care Band Aids
It is always best to bring hiking shoes that are already “broken in” and that you’re comfortable hiking in, but I understand that having these aren’t always the case. So since you will be walking a lot in the Amazon Jungle, bring blister care band-aids in case your shoes cause you discomfort.
Gear & Accessories
22. Daypack / Backpack
Do bring a backpack to hold your essentials during an Amazon trek. Things like bug spray, bug repellant lotion, water, personal fan, and any medications are must-brings on any trek.
23. Phone Lanyard
Having a phone lanyard adds a layer of being worry- and stress-free while you’re trekking through the Amazon. You will always know where it is at all times while it’s connected to your wrist or around your neck.
This phone lanyard comes with both a wristlet lanyard and a neck lanyard so that you have options on how you want your phone to stay with you.
24. Personal Fan
It is hot and humid out in the Amazon Jungle, so a personal fan is essential. I brought a neck fan that simply hung around my neck and blew air up to my face. This also helps keep the bugs away from your face too! But be sure to minimize the fan sounds and keep it on the lowest setting if possible. I brought the below fan with me and used it all the time:
Small and perfect to use for longer durations and while doing activities as it simply hangs connected from your neck.
25. Flashlight
Some lodge may have spotty electricity or even have set times for electricity outages. To continue having a light at night, bring a small yet powerful flashlight. I brought the below flashlight which worked so awesome for us! It’s super strong yet small and compact, and can “clip” to hats or shirts for hands-free usage.
26. Portable Charger / Power Bank
Having this is definitely useful for when electricity is out and you can’t charge your electronics overnight.
This power bank seemingly lasts forever and can charge my phone multiple times before the power bank needs its own recharge. It's slim and compact size is also perfect to bring with you everywhere.
27. Camera
Capture all the breathtaking moments of your Amazon Jungle adventure with a high-quality camera. Be sure to bring extra memory cards, batteries or its charger and a power bank. These items made sure I didn’t miss any incredible photo opportunities. To photograph wildlife from afar, I also had a zoom lens, which is extremely useful to capture amazing close-up shots.
28. Binoculars
This is a vital item to pack: binoculars! They allow you to observe animals that are in farther off distances, and also protects you and the wildlife by viewing them from safe distances. Binoculars with 8x, 10x, or 12x magnification is ideal.
These have a strong magnification at 12x, but it also comes with an attachment to hold your camera phone to view through the eyehole. Of course you can use the binoculars without the attachment but I thought this was such a cool feature! It came in handy when I didn't have a fancy high-quality camera and wanted some cool zoomed in shots with my camera phone.
29. Reusable Water Bottle
On every Amazon trek you take, bring water!!! Keep yourself hydrated while hiking since dehydration hits faster when out in jungle heat.
Perfect for maintaining the temperature of your drinks, these bottles are a must-have for staying cool and hydrated, especially during long outdoor activities
30. Ziplock or Dry Bags
Keep your valuable and electronics, such as your portable charger/power bank and cash, safe from spontaneous pouring rains, and keep them in ziplock bags to keep them nice and dry.
Miscellaneous
31. Snacks or Energy Bars
Since you will be hiking in the heat, you’re likely to feel famished or hungry faster than usual. To keep yourself energized, bring some snacks or energy bars you can easily eat while trekking through the rainforest. Just be sure to keep your trash on your person until you get to a proper trash bin.
32. Pen & Travel Journal
Bringing a pen and notebook used to be something I overlooked or forgot bringing, but now these have become one of my top basic travel essentials. Having a pen handy is super useful to fill in any forms, and a notebook (aka travel journal) is a great way to jot down trip notes and any fun stories, memories, and facts.
