Intro
When people think about going on a safari, they think about going on game drives riding in the back of a safari truck to spot wildlife. But did you know there is also an opportunity to spot and observe wildlife from the water? Chobe National Park offers a River Cruise Safari where you can see more animals hanging around the Chobe River. Both are unforgettable but they do offer completely different perspectives. Here’s how they compare.
Land Safari: Classic Safari Adventure
On a traditional game drive, you’ll head out in an open-sided 4×4 vehicle with a guide.
What You’ll See
Herds of elephants, prides of lions, giraffes, zebras, and sometimes even leopards.
The Feel
Up-close, intimate, and adventurous. Being on the ground brings you eye-level with wildlife and makes every sighting feel like a thrill
Best For
Spotting predators, following animal tracks, and getting that quintessential safari experience.

River Safari: A Unique Perspective from the Water
Instead of driving, a river safari takes place on a boat cruising along the Chobe River.
What You’ll See
Huge groups of elephants swimming and playing in the water, hippos yawning on the banks, crocodiles sunbathing, and birdlife.
The Feel
Peaceful, scenic, and getting to see animals interact with the water
Best For
Photography, birdwatching, and observing large groups of animals in one place.

So Which Should You Choose?
If you can do both, do both! A land safari gives you the thrill of tracking predators and the rugged feel of being in the bush, while a river safari gives you the tranquility of the water and the chance to see animals from a totally different angle. Together, they create a more complete picture of life in Chobe and of its diverse ecosystem.
Where to Stay near Chobe National Park
I stayed at Kwalape Safari Lodge located in Kasane near the Chobe National Park. They have luxury villas available and a nice pool with dedicated bar. Book your stay by clicking here.
Final Words
Chobe is one of the rare places in Africa where you can experience both land and river safaris on the same day. In the morning, you could be bumping along dusty tracks following lion prints, and by afternoon, you could be sipping a beer on a boat as elephants cool off in the Chobe River. Two very different game drives but both unforgettable in their own way.
