Intro
Copenhagen is the charming and vibrant capital of Denmark! The Danish capital is full of a rich history and culture, and has an endless amount of sights and attractions. However, if you’re only in Copenhagen for a couple days, then you must visit the best locations to see and learn as much as you can in a short period of time. This 2-day itinerary will cover the best the city has to offer by visiting royal castles, significant cathedrals, and cultural museums.
Getting Around Copenhagen
Bike
Once you get into Copenhagen, you’ll immediately notice how bike-friendly the city is. You can experience Copenhagen like a local and rent a bike to get around central Copenhagen. Some bike shops also offer a bike tour where you can go around the city with a guide who will provide information and interesting facts about the sights.
To book a bike tour or rent a bike, check out City Bike Adventures near Nyhavn! I rented a bike from this establishment and I was pleased with their service. I am on the shorter side, and I requested to use a smaller bike which they kindly accommodated. They also ensure the bike’s tires are pumped (they pumped air into my tires), and they also provide a handle basket to hold all your belongings.
Copenhagen Card
The Copenhagen Card offers two card options – Discover and Hop – that includes transportation around Copenhagen that stop near all the major attractions. Check out the Copenhagen Card options here. You can purchase multi-day options to fit your itinerary.
If you decide to follow this itinerary without booking the mentioned tours or renting a bike, then the Hop Copenhagen Card will cover all Day 1 stops, and the Discover Copenhagen Card will cover all Day 2 stops.
Rideshare
In Copenhagen, you can use a rideshare service to get around. The Viggo app works exactly like Uber or Lyft where you can call for a ride on-demand via the app, and pay for the ride service in app too. This might be a bit pricy but is also fast and convenient.
I used the Viggo app twice during my visit in Copenhagen, and the drivers were always quick to arrive, and brought me to my destination with ease and worry-free. This is certainly a viable option of transportation if you don’t want to deal with using other methods.

Day 1: Explore Copenhagen’s Historic and Scenic Sights
When you arrive in Copenhagen, it’s clear that it’s a bike-friendly city. SO! There’s no better way to explore the city than by bike. On the 1st day of this 2-day itinerary of Copenhagen, you will admire views from scenic bridges, stop by historical sites, and explore vibrant streets.
You can experience the same stops with a live tour guide who will bike with you to each location and provide information and interesting facts. Book this bike tour here, or in the widget below.
I highly recommend booking a bike tour so you can have a biking guide AND you can learn as much as you can about the Danish landmarks, history, and culture. You can also rent a bike at City Bike Adventures near Nyhavn, where the first day of this itinerary will begin near.
Book the bike tour in the widget below:
Alternatively, take the Hop-On, Hop-Off bus that will take you all around Copenhagen with stops near all the below-mentioned locations.
Cross the Inderhavnsbroen Bridge
Begin your day by picking up a rental bike and make your way across Inderhavnsbroen Bridge. This modern bridge connects Nyhavn and Christanshavn where you can get lovely views as you cross it. There is a pedestrian walkway and two-way cycling lanes, so be sure to stay on the correct lane!
The bridge does have a slight upward incline so if you’re out of shape (like I am) you might get a bit of workout. I definitely felt a little burn but it wasn’t too bad and the incline was short-lived.
Christiania
Your first stop is at Freetown Christiania, a colorfully bohemian autonomous neighborhood. Since this is the first stop in the morning, then you’ll likely see street vendors setting up for the day. If you’re interested in seeing Freetown Christiania more lively and busy, then you can come back later in the day for a drink or a little browsing.
During my visit, I took a stroll through the streets and quickly noticed the colorful street art, quirky architecture, and the eclectic vibe and atmosphere. It felt as if walking into a completely different city. Towards the center, there is an outdoor eating area but behind the food vendors on the left-hand side, there is a little path up a small hill where you can walk up and see a nice view of a lake! This was definitely a nice hidden gem.
Freetown Christiania
Our Savior’s Church
Not far from Christiana is the Our Savior’s Church. This Church has an iconic baroque spiral tower you can easily spot from anywhere in Copenhagen. If you have time, you can climb up the steps to get a panoramic view of Copenhagen. Note: If you’re on the bike tour, you take a brief stop here but will not have time to go up.
Circle Bridge (Cirkelbroen)
The next stop will be the iconic Circle Bridge! This bridge is a modern and unique pedestrian bridge whose design was inspired by ship sails. This is a perfect spot to stop and take some photos! Right across the water is the Black Diamond library, and to the right is the Inderhavnsbroen Bridge that you cross in the morning.
When I stopped at the Circle Bridge, I visited on a nice clear day where the sun was shining in just the right position where the sunlight shone on the water and reflected onto the glass face of the Black Diamond library, making it shine and glisten! It was a nice little surprise.
Christiansborg Palace (Christiansborg Slot)
Next, head to Christiansborg Palace which is home to Denmark’s Parliament and Supreme Court. This is the political heart of Denmark and also holds historical significance. Again, if you have time, you can explore the rooms of the palace, visit the Royal Stable, or even go up the Christiansborg Tower to get another great view of the city. Note: If you’re on the bike tour, you take a brief stop here but will not have time to go in or up.
Church of Our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke)
Take a quick stop by the Church of Our Lady, a magnificent cathedral with beautiful neoclassical architecture. Here you can admire the interiors and the statue of Jesus Christ at the end of the church.
Round Tower (Rundetaarn)
Near the Church of Our Lady is the Round Tower. It is interestingly the oldest functioning observatory in Europe! Inside has a unique spiral walkway to the top. Again, if you have time, make your way to the top for more amazing views of Copenhagen. If interested, there are also stargazing sessions here too! Note: If you’re on the bike tour, you take a brief stop here but will not have time to go up.
King’s Garden & Rosenborg Castle
Make your way to King’s Garden to admire the trees and greenery. You can either pass by this area or if you have time, you can have a picnic, or explore the castle’s elegant rooms full of royal treasures. Note: If you’re on the bike tour, you take a brief stop here but will not have time to go in.
When I got to the Garden, I immediately noticed how different it was from the bustling city I was just biking through. The greenery of the Garden was so serene yet also so lively with people. There were people just enjoying the nice day and picnicking with a beautiful backdrop of Rosenborg Castle.
Nyboders Mindestuer
Stop by Nyboders Mindestuer to admire one of Copenhagen’s oldest neighborhoods. It is home of the yellow houses which were originally built for the Danish navy but now serve as residences. I just took a quick stop here for a quick break and take a few photos of these uniquely colored buildings.
The Little Mermaid & Gefion Fountain
When in Copenhagen, you MUST stop by The Little Mermaid statue! This statue was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, and also influenced Disney’s Ariel, The Little Mermaid. When you see the statue, you notice it’s surprisingly small which is due to the fact that she is actually sculpted to be the size of a real woman.
Not far from The Little Mermaid statue is the Gefion Fountain. It is Copehagen’s largest monument with a sculpture of a Norse Goddess driving her oxen-drawn carriage. You can take some pretty pictures here with this amazing fountain.
Amalienborg Palace
Before returning your bike, take a stop at Amalienborg Palace where the Danish royal family official residence is located. On one end of the square, you can see the elegant Frederik’s Church, and on the opposite end, the contemporary Copenhagen Opera House. I always love a great mix of traditional and modern sights.
Nyhavn and Canal Cruise
End your day in the vibrant street of Nyhavn! It is the most picturesque and lively waterfront of Copenhagen, and deserves a spot in your 2 day itinerary. Take some time here to admire and take photos of the colorful houses and the boats that frame them.
I love this street and spent a ton of time here. Just being in the lively atmosphere with a unique line of buildings, boats, and the water was a whole vibe. If you have a chance, visit Nyhavn in the early morning or in the evening. During these times, the canal boats will not be in operation, making the canal waters more calm. When the water is calm enough, then there will be a beautiful reflection of the buildings and boats against the water.

Nyhavn Canal Cruise
There are multiple establishments along the canal where you can board a canal cruise. They will take you through the canals with a guide to explain the surrounding sights. This is a great way to get some amazing views of Copenhagen from the water.
I took a canal cruise called “Havnerundfart” which cost 60 KR (adult) / 30 KR (child) for a 60 minute guided tour through the canals. The boat I was on had a half open-air, half closed cover which sort of blocked views on the opposite side of where I sat. It didn’t bother me tooo much but I think I would have liked being on a fully open-air boat so that I can see all the landmarks the tour guide was pointing out. However, I did notice there were guided boats that are fully open-air, and they were located at the very end of the canal. On a rainy day though, I would have appreciated the half covered boat more.

Nyhavn for Dinner & Drinks
Then, browse the endless amount of canal-side restaurants and grab a drink and/or dinner. I grabbed a glass of wine at Judie, which is on a canal boat and has a cute outdoor patio (for drinks only). It was the perfect location to relax and admire the canal views, colorful buildings, and the lively atmosphere. For dinner, I roamed a bit until I ended at Hvttefadet, who had a delicious “stegt flæsk”, Denmark’s national dish consisting of crispy pork belly with potatoes and parsley sauce. Delicious!!

Day 2: Day Trips to Castles and Viking History
On your second day of your 2 day itinerary, get outside of central Copenhagen and learn about Denmark’s rich history. Today you will visit a significant cathedral, elegant palaces, learn about Viking history and see real-life Viking ships!
If you want to experience all the stops on this day with a live tour guide who also provides transportation, then book it here, or in the widget below. I highly recommend booking a tour so you can have a driver/guide AND you can learn as much as you can about the Danish landmarks, history, and culture.
Alternatively, the Discover Copenhagen Card includes stops near and access to all these locations.
Roskilde Cathedral (Roskilde Domkirke)
Start your day visiting the Roskilde region with the first stop being at the Roskilde Cathedral. The Roskilde Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site and holds many of Denmark’s monarch’s graves.
There are several rooms that have elaborate sarcophaguses and monuments of past Danish royalty. They are all adorned with elegant designs and sculptures. I found the sarcophagus of Queen Margrete I to be the most beautiful, with white ecclesiastical figures and a pretty deep blue color paired with gold. Not only that, but I also really admired the stunning neoclassical Greek-inspired architecture of “the white chapel” room. In this room, there’s also a mirror on the ground to get a selfie picture with the ceiling.

Viking Ship Museum
Your next stop in Roskilde will be the Viking Ship Museum. It is located right on the Roskilde fjord where you can spot replicated Viking ships sailing in these waters. Inside the museum, there are five original Viking ships that were recovered from the fjord and are now on display.
During my visit, I got a fascinating and interactive look at Viking history and their way of life. Fun fact: did you know that the Vikings never had horns on their helmets that we picture them as today? Additionally, I really liked all the Viking ship replicas and you can even see the woodshop that builds them. Not only that, but you can even board a full-scale replica of a Viking ship that’s sitting in the water near the museum!

Frederiksborg Castle
After your time in Roskilde, head to Hillerød and visit Frederiksborg Castle. This castle is the largest castle in Scandinavia and is located on a beautiful lake along with its stunning garden. Spend a bit of time here to explore the lavish rooms and walk through the gardens. But definitely don’t forget to stop by the chapel too!
The chapel is my favorite part of the castle since it is one of the original rooms that did not perish in a past fire (and rebuilt) like most parts of the castle were. Not only that, but I love the way the chapel is gold at the top then gradients down into a grey-blue color. So unique and pretty!
Frederiksborg Castle
Kronborg Castle
If you still have time in your day, make your way to Kronborg Castle in Helsingør. The Krongborg Castle is located right on the Øresund Strait where you can even see Sweden across the water. Additionally, this castle is also a UNESCO World Heritage site with its symbol of Danish power and resilience. The castle closes at 5 PM, so if you get here on the later side, be sure to at least check out the small room where the fight in Shakespeare’s Hamlet is said to have taken place, as well as the Great Hall, the largest Hall in Northern Europe.

Return to Copenhagen
After your visit at the Kronborg, head back to central Copenhagen in the evening. End your 2 day itinerary in Copenhagen by unwinding with a relaxing dinner and/or drinks.
Final Words
In just 2 days, you can immerse yourself in the rich history of Copenhagen by adding the best attractions to your day itinerary. You can bike through its beautiful streets, cruise through its canals, and visit Denmark’s most iconic landmarks. I hope this 2 day itinerary helps you plan your visit to the charming city of Copenhagen! Bon Voyage!
