Brief History
Drottningholm Palace was built in the 1600s and was inspired by French architecture, specifically by the Palace of Versailles. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been home to Swedish royals and is even so to this day. Even so, the palace grounds is open to the public to visit and explore, although you can’t enter the royal family’s residence wing.
Drottningholm Palace Highlights
Palace Interiors
Once you enter inside the palace, there are grand staircases with beautiful statues and marbled walls. The adjacent rooms are full with large elaborate tapestries that will make you think of the incredible skill it took to craft them. Some rooms are decorated with intricate clocks and chandeliers that it was hard to not take a picture of everything.

The more you explore the palace, you’ll pass through more ornate bedrooms with beautifully-detailed woodwork, as well as large lavish halls with incredible ceiling and wall paintings paired with more fancy chandeliers. It’s really amazing walking through the rooms full of royal history.

Palace Gardens
Behind the palace are the large garden grounds that you’re allowed to stroll through. From the gardens, you can really see the resemblance of Drottningholm Palace to the Palace of Versailles. The garden itself is made symmetrical, with lines of trees and paths shaped by bushes.

Changing of the Guards
One of the highlights of visiting Drottningholm Palace is watching the Changing of the Guards ceremony. Although this does not take place every day, if you do catch it, it is a nice treat. It’s a chance to see Swedish royal tradition where you get the chance to see guards dressed in their military uniform and march in disciplined unison.
