Why Visit Livraria Lello?
Livraria Lello was founded in 1906 and has become a Porto icon thanks to its neo-Gothic facade, stained glass ceiling, and its famously winding wooden staircase that looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel. Many visitors are drawn here because of the rumors that it inspired J.K. Rowling’s vision of Hogwarts while she lived in Porto. Although Rowling has since clarified this wasn’t the case, it doesn’t stop the bookshop from feeling enchanting and “Harry Potter-esque.” It’s definitely noticeable the moment you walk in.
What to See Inside
The Grand Staircase
The sweeping red staircase is definitely the centerpiece of the bookshop. It curls dramatically upward in two directions and curves in a unique way you’re going to want to take photos with or on them. The staircase is one of the most photographed spots in Porto.

The Stained Glass Skylight
Look up to admire the intricate stained glass ceiling with the words “Decus in Labore” (“Dignity in Work”), The skylight covers almost the entire ceiling and floods the shop with a colorful soft light.

The Ornate Woodwork
Don’t forget to notice the carved wooden ceilings and detailing throughout the shop. The craftsmanship adds a warm and old-world atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re in a historic library rather than a modern bookstore. The wordwork details were definitely my favorite part of the bookstore.

Floor-to-Ceiling Bookshelves
Thousands of books line the carved wooden shelves which creates a warm and scholarly atmosphere. You can definitely spend time just browsing the shelves, looking for the one of your favorite books, or even find a new one!

Special Editions
Lello publishes its own beautiful editions of classics, which make for perfect souvenirs for friends, family, or even yourself. You’ll find everything from Portuguese literature to international titles. Don’t worry, they also have books in English too in case you’re wondering!

Is it Worth the Hype?
Some people might hesitate because of the long lines and entry fee, but Livraria Lello really is special. If you’re a book lover, an architecture fan, or simply looking for a unique Porto experience, then Livraria Lello is one of those places you won’t forget. Especially if you’re a Harry Potter fan, then you’ll definitely like the vibes in this bookstore. There’s even Livraria Lello Harry Potter special editions too.
I did knock off a star because the bookstore is “small”. It is a long and narrow bookstore, which is to be expected for a building in a city center. But because it is a small space, the bookstore can be a bit packed at times. You might find yourself elbow-to-elbow with other visitors, or waiting to browse a certain bookshelf, or get a picture on the staircase. Even so, I found the overall experience still worth it because of the beautiful woodwork, unique staircase, and the Harry Potter-esque atmosphere.

Tips to Make the Most of Your Adventure
1. Buy Tickets in Advance
Buying tickets in advance is recommended as the walk-up line can get pretty long. When booking, you specify a date and time for your entry. Doing this will allow you to go to the library at your designated time and get in without a long wait (rather than waiting for who-knows-how-long in the walk-up queue).
2. Buy the Ticket Option that Includes a Book
There are normal entry tickets but opt for the Silver or Gold entry ticket option that includes a book! As part of this ticket option, you can pick any book and it will either be €10 or €15 off! If you choose the Gold entry option then one of the “Collection” series (a €15 book) is included in your entry. This is a great souvenir, especially if you’re a bookie.
3. Bring a Camera
Livraria Lello is a beautiful library so bring a camera! A camera phone will work just fine too of course. If you want to take a photo on the staircase, there might be a line too so be a bit patient if you want an iconic shot. I didn’t get a photo on the staircase, but behind it on the balcony and there was no line there!
