If you’re visiting Auckland and craving a little nature, culture, and geothermal magic, a day tour to Rotorua is one of the best ways to experience the North Island beyond the city. I recently joined a full-day small-group tour that covered Te Puia in the morning and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland in the afternoon. It was a long day, but incredibly worth it.
In this post, I will provide information on what to expect on the Rotorua Small-Group Day Tour from Auckland based on my own experiences. Don’t forget to check my tips out too!

Why Choose a Rotorua Day Tour from Auckland?
The drive from Auckland to Rotorua is around 3 hours each way, which can feel like a lot if you’re doing it on your own. However, with a guided tour, you can:
- Not worry about driving nor navigating nor parking
- Learn about Māori history and geothermal activity
- Get priority entry into Te Puia
- Follow an organized schedule
- Enjoy a relaxing day without logistics
- Nap during the long drives
Going with a tour is definitely an ideal option if you’re short on time but still want to experience the best of Rotorua in one day.
Morning: Te Puia – Geothermal Wonders & Māori Cultural Experience
Te Puia is one of Rotorua’s most famous attractions with the Pōhutu Geyser, bubbling mud pools, and unique mineral deposits. Te Puia also has the Māori Cultural Arts & Crafts Institute where you can see New Zealand’s national weaving school and the country’s only Māori carving institute. It’s a beautiful introduction into learning about and seeing both Māori culture as well as geothermal activity.
What You’ll See at Te Puia
Once you’re inside Te Puia, you are grouped with a knowledgeable Māori guide that leads you around the geothermal park and the institute, and provides valuable insight, information and fun facts.
Geothermal Activity
As mentioned, Te Puia is home to the world-famous Pōhutu Geyser. It erupts multiple times a day, and up to 30 meters up into the sky! You can see the geyser from multiple locations inside Te Puia, so if you miss it erupting while you’re near it, you might still be able to catch erupt from afar!
There’s also steaming vents throughout Te Puia, where you’ll see towers of steam and smoke coming out of the ground. And there’s a bubbling mud pool that really makes you wonder just how hot it is beneath the surface. All the geothermal activity also creates mineral deposit buildup, where you’ll get to see unique and otherworldly rock formations that you can only see here.
Māori Cultural Arts & Crafts Institute
The New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute is also part of Te Puia, where you’ll be able to see the elaborate and intricate wood carvings. You can see real students working on their own projects, as well as beautiful finished wood work.
The Institute also has a weaving school, where if you don’t know anything related to weaving, or even what is even possible to weave, then this part of the school will surprise you. There are tons of weaved items, from flying kites to even pretty flowers. It’s amazing what can be created through weaving.
Kiwi Hatchery
Inside Te Puia, there’s a Kiwi Conservation Centre that promotes Kiwi conservation and educate visitors about extensive conservation efforts being made to increase the Kiwi birds’ numbers in the wild. The Kiwi bird is unfortunately threatened, and since it’s the national bird of New Zealand, a lot of work is put into saving these incredible animals.
At the Kiwi hatchery, you’ll be able to learn about the current residents, and if you’re lucky, actually be able to see them with your own eyes. Just be sure to stay quiet while walking through it to not startle them and DO NOT take pictures.
Māori Cultural Show & Lunch
For an extra cost, you can add watching the Māori Cultural Show and have lunch. If the tour you’re considering has this add-on, I highly recommend you add it! I actually messaged the tour operator (through Viator) if they offered it, and I’m so glad they did! I just had to make another payment through a secure link they provided.
The Māori cultural show gives you a sneak peek into Māori culture and how the Māori people would have responded to visitors to their land. The performers sing and perform beautiful traditional songs and dance, and give great context to each number with insights into Māori history, legends, and traditions.
And the best part: you get to see a live haka performed! I have only seen the haka performed through videos so it was thrilling to be able to see it live. It’s a powerful performance and will leave you with chills.
Then after the show, you are brought into a large lunch hall for a buffet-style lunch (Māori hāngī-style). If you’re lucky, you might also be seated by the windows facing the Pōhutu Geyser and see it erupt while you’re eating.
Afternoon: Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
After Te Puia, the tour group will split depending on what you selected. Those who opted for the Hot Springs will be dropped off first, then those who chose Wai-O-Tapu will be dropped off. The guide did come into the Visitor Center to collect our tickets and to also point out which trail we should follow to finish on time. We were given 1 hour to explore and you do walk through the park self-guided.
Wai-O-Tapu is one of New Zealand’s most colorful and dramatic geothermal parks. You’ll see neon greens, bright oranges, deep blues, and pastel yellows in this volcanic landscape. We followed “Walk 1” trail which covers all the main sights, such as the:
- Champagne Pool
- Devil’s Bath
- Artist’s Palette
- and sulfur terraces, craters, mud pools, and steaming lakes
The path is well-marked and it’s flat and easy! Just be sure to ALWAYS stay on the marked paths and never veer off of them for your own safety. Also expect a strong sulfur smell at times too. Although you do get used to pretty quickly.
Optional Hot Spring Instead of Wai-O-Tapu
Some tours give you the option to visit a geothermal hot spring instead of Wai-O-Tapu. Our tour brought the hot springs participants to Polynesian Spa. I opted not to choose the hot spring add-on because:
- I wanted to experience Wai-O-Tapu’s iconic landscapes
- I prefer exploring rather than soaking when I’m short on time
- Wai-O-Tapu is one of those must-see New Zealand sights
But if you’re traveling in colder months or love a good relaxing soak, then it’s a great alternative!
Drive Back to Auckland
After a full day of geothermal wonders, cultural experiences, and walking trails, then you head back to Auckland in the late afternoon. A perfect time to take a nap :). Expect to arrive back at your hotel around X PM, depending on traffic. It’s a long day but it’s exciting, comfortable, and extremely rewarding.
Is It Worth It?
| 👍PROS | ⚠️CONS / WHAT TO CONSIDER |
|---|---|
| Hassle-free transportation: you don’t need to drive 6+ hours roundtrip | Long day (12–13 hours) with a lot of time on the road |
| Visit Te Puia and see the Pōhutu Geyser, mud pools, kiwi birds, and cultural sites | Limited time at each attraction since it’s a scheduled tour |
| Optional Māori cultural performance, which adds depth and cultural context | Depending on the tour provider, lunch may not be included, or you will need to request to add it on for extra cost per person. |
| Well-organized itinerary with guides who explain Māori culture and geothermal features | Can feel rushed if you prefer slow-paced travel or want to explore independently |
| Wai-O-Tapu’s colorful geothermal landscapes are among New Zealand’s most famous natural sights | Strong sulfur smell may be uncomfortable for sensitive travelers |
| Great option if you don’t have a rental car | No flexibility to swap times or stay longer at spots you love |
| Optional hot spring add-on for those who want a more relaxing afternoon | If you choose Wai-O-Tapu instead of the hot springs, you’ll miss the spa experience (and vice versa) |
| Small-group tours offer a more personal feel | Some tours can be pricier than self-driving (but worth it for convenience) |
Tips to Make the Most of Your Adventure
1. Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes
You will be walking a lot at Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
2. Bring Water & Snacks
The drives can be long, and there is a break stop before arriving at Te Puia, but do bring snacks and water to sustain you.
3. Book the Māori show if it’s Offered
The Tour I linked does not explicitly have the Māori show as an add-on, but you are able to message them and request it be added. They will send a secure link where you can pay for that add on. Alternatively, you can also add it on day-of. The tour guide did offer it to our group and those who did not pre-request it (like I did) were able to join and watch the show.
4. Prepare to Expect Strong Sulfur Smells
The sulfur does emit a strong smell, so just be prepared to expect it and don’t be too surprised.
5. Always Stay on the Marked Paths at the Geothermal Parks
Self-explanatory, and this is for your own safety!
6. Don’t wear Silver Jewelry at Wai-O-Tapu
Silver may tarnish because of the high concentration of sulfur in the geothermal environment.
7. Avoid Having Steam hit your Camera
For the same reasons as above, also avoid getting your camera exposed to the steam too much either.
Where to Stay in Auckland
I prioritize a convenient location to all the main sights we plan to see. So we opted to stay at the Penthouse Glory located right the harbor. We found this hotel’s location to be perfect since it was right in the harbor with plenty of restaurants and bars nearby.
