What Makes Óbidos Special?
Unlike some touristy towns that can feel a bit staged, Óbidos has retained an authentic old-world character. Once you walk through the tall stone gates, you’ll feel like you stepped into the past, right back to the medieval times. The whole village is encircled by tall medieval walls that you can actually go up on and get some incredible views of the city and the land beyond the walls.
Down on the narrow cobblestone streets, the whitewashed cottages with colorful accents will make you feel like you’ve entered a Mediterranean oasis! So unique and pretty. You can roam these streets and spend time exploring what this little town has to offer with its many local craft shops.

The Highlights of a Day in Óbidos
Go Up on the Medieval Walls for the Views
These stone walls encircle the town where you’ll get panoramic views of the orange terracotta rooftops, countryside, and vineyards that lie beyond the town. The views from atop the wall are unforgettable and definitely worth the short climb.
To get to the top of the wall, once you enter through the town’s tall stone gate entrance and pass through Porta da Vila, there is a stone staircase immediately to the left that takes you up to Miradouro Porta viewpoint. Definitely a must-do that makes visiting Obidos already worth it to me.

Stroll Along the Medieval Walls
Once on the walls, one of the best things to do in Óbidos is to walk along its ancient walls. Be forewarned though…there are no railings on one side once you get on the longer stretch of wall, so it can be a bit nerve-wracking walking along.

Explore the CobbleStreets
Óbidos is great place to explore and just get lost. There are two main narrow streets parallel to each other so you can walk up one street and walk back down on the other one. Both are lined with traditional whitewashed houses where some are trimmed in bright blue and yellow and others adorned with beautiful vibrant flowers, reminding you of a Mediterranean city.
The town is full of artisan shops selling pottery, painted tiles, and handmade crafts which make perfect souvenirs. There’s also a medieval jewelry store, Joalharia do Carmo, which sells beautifully crafted medieval style jewelry where you probably won’t leave empty-handed.

Sip Ginjinha in a Chocolate Cup
A visit to Óbidos would NOT be complete without trying ginjinha, the region’s famous cherry liqueur. It’s often served in a little edible chocolate cup too (which I definitely recommend doing if you’re going to try ginjinha since that’s how it’s meant to be enjoyed!).
There is also a certain way to enjoy ginjinha too: You will first sip about half of the cherry liqueur from the chocolate cup, then finish the rest of the cup and remaining liqueur in one bite. It’s sweet, a bit tart, and absolutely delicious! You’ll probably want more than one 🙂
How Long Do You Need in Óbidos?
Óbidos is pretty small where you can see the main highlights in just a few hours. That’s why most people visit on a day trip from Lisbon, often pairing it with nearby stops like Nazaré.
I actually only spent 1.5 hours in Óbidos but I do wish I had spent an extra hour or 2 to enjoy a sit-down meal with the medieval and Mediterranean ambiance and do more in-depth shopping. I was also not able to walk the entire wall either, so if you want to walk the wall, definitely add more time to your visit.

Tips to Make the Most of Your Adventure
1. Getting there
Buses run regularly from Lisbon, or you can drive in about an hour. Taking a tour will take the guesswork out of logistics though.
2. Avoid Peak Crowd Times
Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid peak crowds. I got to Óbidos at around 2 PM and it was not crowded at all. It will probably be most crowded mid-morning when tours are stopping by.
3. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Wear comfortable walking shoes since the town does have uneven cobblestone streets.
4. Entry is Free!
Entry to the town is free so your main expenses will be food, drinks, and shopping.
