First Impressions
The cruise begins on a calm stretch of the Zambezi River upstream of the Victoria Falls before the water flows down the famous waterfall. The boat I boarded had two open-air but covered decks with tables and seating for every group. My group was on the bottom deck, where we had closer views of the wildlife at the surface of the water. However, the top deck did provide better views in general since it provides a higher vantage point.

Wildlife and Scenery
One of the highlights of a Zambezi River Cruise is the wildlife. From the water, you may see elephants drinking at the river banks, hippos bopping their heads out of the water, or crocodiles lurking. Can’t forget the endless birdlife in this region too.

What makes a Zambezi River Cruise special though is the different perspective it offers for the wildlife in Victoria Falls. Unlike a game drive, you can quietly drift along the Zambezi River and watch animals from a different angle.
If you can, opt to go on a sunset cruise! We did and the sun set towards the second half of the cruise. The scenery was so beautiful where the sun turned magenta pink against the colorful sky. So pretty!!

Onboard Experience
Depending on the operator, the cruise can feel like a floating safari bar. On my cruise, we had unlimited drinks but the alcohol options were very limited. Light snacks are also usually provided, where some cruises do offer dinners. This is a perfect experience for couples, families and friend groups.

Why It’s Worth It
A Zambezi River cruise offers a peaceful yet thrilling way to experience the natural beauty and incredible wildlife of Victoria Falls from a different perspective. It’s peaceful and photogenic, and you get to experience the African wilderness and Victoria Falls in a unique way. Watching the sunset combined with unlimited drinks also made it well worth it for me too.
Tips to Make the Most of Your Adventure
1. Bring a camera
Bring a camera for wildlife sightings and to capture the breathtaking African sunset!!
2. Food & Drink Inclusions
Depending on the cruise operator, small hors d’oeuvres / snacks are provided, where the more luxurious cruises will offer dinner. Drinks can also be unlimited, including alcoholic beverages, just be sure to check your cruise’s inclusions so you know what to prepare for, food/drink-wise.
The cruise I went on only had local beer, wine, whiskey, and vodka, which was expected.
3. Check the Top Deck
If your boat has multiple decks, be sure to check the top deck for incredible views!
Where to Stay in Victoria Falls
I stayed at Shearwater’s Explorer Village which is centrally located. It’s a short walk to nearby shops, and restaurants, but also has its own restaurant, two bars and a lounging area so you can stay on site during your stay. There’s also a nice two-tier swimming pool you can relax it after a day out. Book your stay by clicking here, or check availability for your dates below and click “Search”:
Final Words: Worth It!
If you’re visiting Victoria Falls, a Zambezi River Cruise is a must and worth adding to your Zimbabwe itinerary. You can sip on a drink, watch the sunset, and see Africa’s wildlife in one experience. I hope this Zambezi River Cruise review encourages you to book it.
